Google aims to reactivate gambling on the Brazil Play Store

In light of new SPA licensing laws, Google has once again permitted gambling apps in the Brazilian Play Store. Four groups of apps will be created in accordance with legal compliance initiatives aimed at removing unlicensed operators from Brazil’s quickly growing betting market.

The internet giant is now permitting Brazilian gambling companies to market apps on the Google Play Store following a previous ban.

Google has now formally permitted gambling applications on its local Google Play Store, six months after Brazil implemented a new licensing system that complies with local laws.

All operators utilizing the Google Play Store and Google Ads platforms must now hold a license from SPA, Brazil’s regulatory body, in accordance with the revised standards.

Applications related to gambling will be categorized into four groups on the Play Store: Lotteries, Horse Racing, Betting Tips, and Daily Fantasy Games.

This is a component of SPA’s broader plan to drive out illicit operators aiming to take advantage of the emerging Brazilian market.

It took four years to develop. Beginning in early 2021, Google’s Real Money Gaming (RMG) platform allowed users in 15 more jurisdictions to download gambling applications from operators who have received licenses from the relevant authorities. Only France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom were supported before that update.

In a sense, Brazil was on that list as well, but because it didn’t have a regulated market at the time, geo-specific customers could only download the lottery and horse racing betting applications that had state licenses.
