Cole Hocker disqualification: Reigning Olympic gold medalist Cole Hocker was disqualified from the men’s 1500-meter semifinal at the World Championships on Monday. The decision came after officials ruled he made contact with Germany’s Robert Farken in the final 50 meters, an incident categorized as “jostling” under World Athletics rule TR17.1.2[J].
Why Cole Hocker was disqualified? What the rule says
The rule defines jostling as physical contact that gives an unfair advantage or disrupts another athlete’s performance. Race officials determined that Hocker’s shoulder-to-shoulder move with athlete Farken interfered with the German runner, who eventually finished 10th in the heat.

Appeal denied
USA Track & Field confirmed that it filed an appeal against the ruling, but the attempt was rejected. Hocker had initially crossed the line in second place, which would have sent him into the final. Instead, only Jonah Koech advanced for Team USA, while Ethan Strand also missed out after finishing eighth in his semifinal.
Hocker’s reaction
Before hearing about his disqualification, Hocker explained his race strategy in an interview. “Obviously I’m not trying to affect anyone else’s race,” he said. “I was just trying to get to the line in that top six position.” He admitted he would have preferred a cleaner race and later reflected that staying closer to the front earlier might have been a better choice.
