Despite continuous legal scrutiny, Kalshi, a prediction market that now offers political contracts, made headlines when Republican Kyle Langford wagered $98.76 on his own gubernatorial campaign.
A California gubernatorial candidate utilized the prediction market portal Kalshi to buy political result contracts for himself.
The Republican contender for governor of California bought contracts totaling $98.76.
Kalshi started selling election result markets in the fall of 2025.
Langford is up against a number of highly seasoned Democratic contenders.
Republican Kyle Langford openly claimed on the social networking site X that he had purchased $98.76 in contracts on his Kalshi account in order to become governor of the Golden State in 2026. If “Yes” comes true, Langford will receive a $405 reward, resulting in a profit of $306.32.
Despite getting cease-and-desist orders from multiple locations where state-regulated sports betting is permitted, Kalshi continues to operate in all 50 states. Sportsbooks in the United States do not provide odds on political elections. Kalshi secured a court order last year to offer prediction result markets for the 2024 presidential election, as well as markets for other recently filled positions.
Because trading marketplaces are still in their early stages, candidates seldom buy their own contracts. On Tuesday morning, Kalshi’s market ranked Langford as sixth in odds among the market’s contestants, with a 6% probability of winning the race.
