In response to a shocking federal indictment that claims private player information was leaked to gamblers, the National Basketball Association informed its 30 teams on Monday that it was launching a comprehensive review of betting-related issues in order to “protect the integrity of the NBA and our affiliated leagues.”
According to a message from the NBA to its teams that CNBC was able to get, the examination will specifically concentrate on proposition bets provided by legitimate online sports bookies, which let bettors speculate on the statistical performance of certain players.
The memo states that in addition to prop bets, the league will examine how player injuries are disclosed to the public and look into ways to enhance the use of artificial intelligence and other tools to spot betting patterns that imply gamblers have access to inside information about players and teams.

The NBA’s board of governors, team presidents, general managers, and team counsellors received the message from NBA General Counsel Rick Buchanan and Dan Spillane, the executive vice president in charge of governance and policy.
Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat was one of the six individuals listed in the indictment that was unsealed last week in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, New York. Rozier and the others are charged with conspiring to commit money laundering and wire fraud.
According to the indictment, the “defendants and certain co-conspirators had access to private information known by NBA players or NBA coaches, and that this information was shared with others who exploited it to make profitable bets with companies that included FanDuel and DraftKings, the league’s official sports betting partners.”
While playing for the Charlotte Hornets in March 2023, Rozier is accused of telling a close friend that he intended to leave the game early “due to purported injury.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn said on Thursday that the friend and two other persons charged in the same indictment then allegedly used that knowledge to place prop bets totaling more than $200,000 that Rozier would perform poorly in specific areas of play, such as points scored and assists.
Prosecutors stated that Rozier departed the game after just nine minutes, “and many of the bets paid off, generating tens of thousands of dollars in profits.”
“Terry is not a gambler, but he is not afraid of a fight, and he looks forward to winning this fight,” stated Rozier’s attorney Jim Trusty, who denied the player had committed any misconduct.
