Following the Guardians’ investigation, DeWine wants to stop prop bets in Ohio sports betting.

As two Cleveland Guardians players are being looked at in a gambling investigation, Governor Mike DeWine wants Ohio to outlaw prop betting on professional sports.

DeWine demanded that prop betting—the process of putting bets on certain athletes—be outlawed by the Ohio Casino Control Commission. After University of Dayton athletes were harassed by gamblers who lost money, the commission previously took action against collegiate prop betting.

DeWine also intends to approach player unions and major league sports commissioners to support the initiative.

In a statement released on July 31, DeWine stated, “The benefits are not worth the harm, and the harm to athletes and the integrity of the game is clear.” “The prop betting experiment in this country has failed badly.”

Pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Chase were placed on leave by the Guardians as part of a Major League Baseball gambling probe. Two of Ortiz’s pitches that ended up being balls were the subject of “unusual gambling activity” detected by a sportsbook, according to ESPN.
