Ohio Governor’s New Laws on Online Casinos Hitting Hard

Despite his efforts to curb gambling, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine seems to think that the time is not right for online casinos.

At the Ohio State Fair this week, DeWine told reporters that he is “not for it” in terms of the growth of internet casinos. DeWine pointed out possible addiction problems with internet gambling in June.

According to Cleveland.com, DeWine stated, “Basically, I think it is probably not a great idea to put a casino in everybody’s hands, 24/7.” “And in terms of gaming addiction, I believe it will result in more suffering.”

Big V word in Ohio

According to DeWine, he doesn’t often use the phrase “veto.” However, he implied that he may exercise that power when asked if he would veto a law from an online casino, stating, “I’m very much against this.”

He did, however, leave room for e-bingo devices and video lottery terminals in eateries, bowling alleys, and bars.

“I’ll examine each situation separately. DeWine remarked, “I don’t know all the details about that.” “However, I believe the state already has enough gambling.”

Ohio online casino efforts

Members of the Ohio House and Senate submitted proposals pertaining to internet casinos this year. The legislation would have made it possible for the four casinos and seven racinos in the state to provide internet gaming.

The proposals might have raised up to $1.1 billion in expected tax revenue if they had been approved. However, this year’s lawmakers were not in the mood to increase gambling.

In a 2024 study, lawmakers did see benefits to the growth of internet casinos.
