Many people in Whatcom County see casinos as more than just a place to gamble. They serve as social hubs, places of excitement, and, on occasion, sources of personal fulfillment and relief.
Casinos are dynamic establishments set to operate around the clock, though the three casinos in Whatcom County don’t all run 24/7. Silver Reef Casino is practically always open, but Slo Pitch Sports Grill & Casino and Northwood Casino usually close about 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.
Inside, these establishments provide a mix of entertainment, gaming, and hospitality. The interior design has been carefully developed to create an engaging experience for guests. Every detail, from the bright lights of the slot machines to the strategic arrangement of the gaming tables, is intended to excite and capture guests.
Brien McCracken is one of the people that visit casinos to try their luck. He is an active casino guest who frequently interacts with other guests, including assisting or engaging them during games.

“Just the other night, I went into the cash cube for an old lady who was frightened to go into it,” McCracken said. “I actually performed well for her since I won her over $1,100. She expressed gratitude and offered me some, but I rejected. It was fun seeing how excited she was.”
Cash cubes are arcade games in the shape of an enclosure in which paper money is blown through the air while the player tries to capture it. They are also known as money booths and provide a quick, overstimulating sensation.
Terrance Wallace, another casino guest, highlights the pleasure aspects of gaming. “What I like about casino visits, to me, it’s more like a relaxation just to get away and give time to yourself and have fun doing it,” Wallace pointed out.
In Washington State, the casino experience has been transformed by sports betting. The first legal wager was made in September 2021, and it started in March 2020 under tribal gambling compacts. Several casinos have since opened in-person sportsbooks where patrons can wager on a range of sporting events, including Silver Reef Casino Resort, Snoqualmie Casino, and Tulalip Resort Casino.
