Texas Holdem Rules (Step-by-Step)

The Blinds (Small and Big)

The blinds are paid by the two players to the left of the dealer. They must pay their blinds before any cards are dealt, hence why it’s called a “blind”. After cards are dealt, the rest of the players at the table must call or raise the big blind in order to stay in the game

Hole Cards

Hole cards are the two private cards dealt face down to each player

Betting Rounds:

  • Pre-Flop

A player with pocket aces (A-A) decides to raise, hoping to reduce the number of opponents they’ll have to face postflop.

  • Flop

Now, three cards are dealt face-up on the board.

  • Turn

The turn is the fourth community card in Hold’em (and is sometimes also called ‘Fourth Street’).

  • River

In poker, the “river” refers to the fifth and final community card dealt in certain poker games like Texas hold’em and Omaha

  • Showdown

In poker, the showdown is the situation when, if more than one player remains after the final betting round, the remaining players expose and compare their hands to determine the winner or winners.

Betting options: check, call, raise, fold

  • Check: You can check when it is your turn to act, and no one has bet yet in the current betting round
  • Call: When another player has bet or raised, you can call. This means you match the amount of the current bet to stay in the hand and continue playing
  • Raise. When a player makes a bigger bet than the highest bet in a betting round, it is called raise.
  • Fold: If you don’t like your hand or don’t want to continue in the current hand, you can fold.

Texas Holdem Hands Explained

List of hand rankings from highest to lowest:

Royal Flush

A Royal Flush occurs when you have the most valuable cards of the same suit. For example, if you have an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and a Ten of Hearts, you have a royal flush!

Straight Flush

A straight flush consists of five cards of the same suit in sequence, such as 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 of hearts. Four of a Kind – This is the next highest hand.

Four of a Kind

Four of a kind, also known as quads or four cards, is a hand that contains four cards of one rank and one card of another rank (the kicker),

Full House

A full house, also known as a full boat or a tight or a boat (and originally called a full hand), is a hand that contains three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank, such as 3♣ 3♠ 3. ♦ 6♣ 6♥ (a “full house, threes over sixes” or “threes full of sixes” or “threes full”).

Flush

A flush is a hand that contains five cards all of the same suit, not all of sequential rank, such as K♣ 10♣ 7♣ 6♣ 4♣ (a “king-high flush” or a “king-ten-high flush”).

One Pair

In Texas Hold’em, a “one pair” hand consists of two cards of the same rank and three other cards of different ranks.

High Card

If nobody has a pair or better, then the highest card wins.

Basic Strategy for Beginners

These are five strategies that can be used to win in Texas Hold’em poker:

Play tight but aggressive: Only enter with strong hands, but bet aggressively to put pressure on opponents.

Position awareness: Play more hands from late positions to gather information before making decisions.

Use bluffing as a strategy: Bluff selectively to disguise your hand strength and confuse opponents.

Observe patterns: Pay close attention to opponents’ betting styles and typical hands.

Adapt to table dynamics: Adjust your style and strategy based on the skill level and tendencies of players at the table.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Playing from out of position

Experienced Hold’em players well understand the three important factors that most directly affect your strategy in each individual hand — your hand strength, your stack size, and your position.

  • Playing too many hands

Never mind playing too much from out of position, new Hold’em players often play too many hands, period. They fail to recognize the value that comes from being smart with starting hand selection. Even worse, a lot of beginners will play too many hands passively, calling others’ preflop raises with marginal or even weak holdings because they just can’t resist seeing flops.

  • Calling too much/thinking everyone is bluffing

New players tend toward passivity, generally speaking, checking and calling too much and betting and raising too little. One area, though, where this passive play manifests itself in particularly expensive ways is the frequent calling of postflop bets with subpar hands — especially on the turn and river — in the belief that everyone around them is bluffing.

Ultimate Texas Holdem (Casino Version)

How it’s different from traditional Texas Hold’em
