NCAA is Reportedly Considering Removing the Ban on Professional Sports Betting From Its Gambling Policy

The Las Vegas Aces and BetMGM have inked a historic deal that is the first sportsbook agreement with a U.S. women’s professional team. The partnership encourages local philanthropy and increases fan engagement.

The NCAA is exploring dramatic changes to its current sports betting rules.

Last month, the Division I Board of Directors voted 21 to 1 in favour of the “deregulate” plan. The bill has advanced to the D-1 Council, where it will be debated this week. If the restriction is lifted, NCAA members may be able to gamble on professional sports by June.

Wagering on college athletics in any fashion would remain forbidden.

The board also directed the NCAA to examine proposals for “a safe harbour, limited immunity, or reduced penalties” for athletes who wager on sports but seek problem gambling treatment.

Enforcement Changes

This move would relax the NCAA’s position against gambling, according to the article. Enforcement and college compliance officers have seen a considerable surge in professional sports betting infringement cases. Athletes, coaches, and staff generally face minor penalties that take time to serve, which might be one of the reasons for the proposed ban removal.

The NCAA has previously opposed all forms of gambling, but this has changed. The governing organization has cracked down hard on members who have engaged in college sports betting, which appears to be the NCAA’s current emphasis.

Over the previous two years, college basketball has faced several allegations of game-fixing and performance manipulation. A federal inquiry is apparently underway into the case of former NBA centre Jontay Porter, as well as connections to college basketball scandals.
