Nearly a decade after opening, Jamul Casino finally catches up with its competitors.

When the Jamul Casino first opened in 2016, the primary goal was to establish it as a premier gambling and dining destination, with the expectation that an on-site hotel would follow in the future.

Nearly a decade later, that early vision of a resort hotel catering mostly to the casino’s high rollers, loyal players, and out-of-towners has come to fruition. The new 16-story, 200-room hotel tower, described by its chief designer as a “jewel box” rising out of the mountains, was officially opened earlier this month with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

In addition to increasing casino attendance, the hotel’s several upscale features, such as a rooftop pool, would put the resort in a better position to compete with other reputable San Diego County casinos that have long offered upscale accommodations.

“The leadership strategically decided to open in phases, starting with a strong foundation in gaming and entertainment, even though a hotel was always part of the long-term master plan,” stated Mary Cheeks, president and general manager of Jamul Casino Resort, which is owned by the Jamul Indian Village tribe. It’s been a long wait for the tribe and our guests alike because of this strategy, which helped us develop a devoted guest base.

“San Diego is known for its large number of staycations, so this will benefit the entire community, but our devoted visitors will come first. To accommodate their VIP visitors, a casino constructs a hotel. To build that, you need the luxury and tranquilly of the hotel side in addition to the thrill of the casino.

Carl Winston, a specialist in hospitality and tourism, agrees that the hotel will play a significant role in the tribe’s economy, but he also believes that it is long overdue. He points out that it’s the only significant casino in the county to have a hotel.
