New Jersey internet gambling set another record in July—and that’s not even the biggest news.

How hot was the gambling business in New Jersey in July?

Atlantic City’s traditional casinos outperformed the state’s internet gambling business, which established yet another monthly revenue record.

In July, the combined earnings of the nine casinos, two racetracks that take sports wagers, and their partners amounted to $606 million, surpassing $600 million for the second time this year. They won 10.7% more than they did in July of last year.
At $247.3 million, internet gambling broke yet another record, rising 26.6% from the previous year.

Additionally, the state Division of Gaming Enforcement revealed data on Friday that showed the casinos had won $284.1 million, a 4.3% increase, more than they had in July.

But a lot of that was because Atlantic City’s two newest casinos, Ocean Casino Resort and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, were still doing well.

Each of the other seven casinos lost more money from live wagering this month than they did prior to the COVID-19 epidemic in July 2019.

The casinos view winnings from in-person gamblers as their main source of revenue because winnings from online gambling and sports betting must be distributed to third parties, such as sportsbooks and tech platforms.

A bill to ban “sweepstakes gambling” in New Jersey was signed by Governor Phil Murphy on Friday. Critics claim that the practice is too similar to the real thing.

James Plousis, the chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, stated that Atlantic City’s strong summer season persisted in July.

According to him, the total gaming revenue of $3.92 billion for the first seven months of this year is the biggest it has ever been, and the in-person casino revenue number of $1.66 billion is the largest since 2013.

Jane Bokunewicz, director of Stockton University’s Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism, which researches the Atlantic City gambling market, said, “Atlantic City’s casino operators started the third quarter on a high note, setting a new near-term, single-month total gross gaming revenue record with more than $577 million generated from all revenue streams, beating out last August’s $528.5 million single-month high.”
