After a prosperous 2025, the Tar Heel State will begin its second full year of sports betting. In 2026, there will be a chance for gaming to grow and evolve.
Sports environment in North Carolina: Current situation
Since the debut of online sports betting in March 2024, North Carolina has grown to rank among the top 10 U.S. markets in terms of volume. Since then, operators have brought in more than $1 billion in gross income, which has allowed the Tar Heel State to collect more than $200 million in taxes.
In North Carolina, there are presently seven online sportsbooks in operation:
FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics, and bet365
BetMGM, Caesars, theScore Bet
Legislators allowed retail sports betting in 2023, but statewide in-person wagering has never been introduced and doesn’t seem to be necessary for either operators or customers. In North Carolina, there are three tribal casinos that offer live table games, slots, and retail sportsbooks.
