Source: NCAA Is Taking Too Long to Let College Students Bet on Professional Sports

The NCAA has a long way to go before a deadline of 5 p.m. ET on Friday to revoke a regulation that would otherwise permit college players to wager on professional sports, a source tells CNN Sports.

According to the source, 188 Division I institutions have filed the necessary papers to request the rescission as of Thursday night. Two-thirds of the 361 Division I member institutions, or 241, are the magic number to halt the rule switch. College athletes, coaches, and staff will be allowed to wager on professional sports by Saturday AM if that barrier isn’t reached.

The proposed change coincides with increased scrutiny of sports gambling.

Two Major League Baseball players—Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz—as well as Portland Trail Blazers head coach and basketball Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA journeyman Damon Jones have all been detained by federal authorities in the past month on suspicion of participating in various gambling schemes.

Congress has urged sports executives to protect sports integrity, and six college basketball players have been declared permanently ineligible for engaging in game-fixing operations.
