Tribal leaders will re-engage with the CFTC in late May following the sudden cancellation of a roundtable scheduled for April. Federal regulations, market accessibility, and California’s 2026 sports betting ballot are all at risk.
It’s game back on, at least between some tribal interests and the federal organization that regulates futures and derivatives trading in the United States, one month after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) abruptly cancelled a highly anticipated roundtable discussion with a group of stakeholders involved in gaming and gaming-related issues.
Several sources claim that early this month, a senior CFTC representative wrote to certain tribal groups inviting them to join Acting Chairman Caroline Pham for a conference call on May 29 at 1 p.m.

The initial roundtable, which was never publicly publicized by the CFTC, was scheduled on April 30 with a complete agenda from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., divided into two different sessions. Some stakeholders had booked tickets and written comments for the record, only to discover that the agency had cancelled it about a week earlier.
In terms of the actual stakes, tribal interests are deeply concerned that Kalshi, Robinhood, Crypto.com, and other holders of a Designated Contract Markets (DCM) or their partners will emerge from litigation in multiple states, with federal courts having sanctioned sports event contracts across the entire United States, based on CFTC regulations and the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) as it currently stands.
