Study Exposes the Hazards of iGaming in Laramie County, Wyoming

Online gambling is linked to an increase in mental health problems in Laramie County, Wyoming, according to a recent Datacorp study. Since young adults are the most vulnerable, authorities advocate for programs that promote responsible gaming, awareness, and support services.

The Cheyenne Police Department revealed the findings of a research conducted by data analyst Datacorp, which found that internet gamblers in Laramie County are more likely to experience episodes of addiction, anxiety, and despair.

Internet sports betting is the only legal internet gambling option in Wyoming, where the gaming industry has grown rapidly. However, as websites that have been taken down sometimes reemerge under different IP addresses, illicit online casino games are still available.

According to the study, the likelihood of addiction increases for online gamblers who play longer, go over budget more frequently, and experience strained relationships.

Online platforms don’t have spending “bumpers,” so money refills are easy, according to Susan Janke, chief operating officer of Datacorp.

Young males aged 18 to 29 are particularly vulnerable, with 29% of men and 26% of women reporting numerous gambling-related disorders. Despite the increased hazards, 73% of gamblers are hesitant to seek assistance, and many are ignorant of available services.

The report recommends professional staff training, support groups, and financial planning tools.

Laramie County earns around US$70,000 per year from online sports wagering taxes to address problem gambling. Cheyenne Regional Medical Centre and Volunteers of America Northern Rockies are partnering to investigate and resolve the problem.

In addition, the Wyoming Gaming Commission maintains a self-exclusion list, and the Wyoming Responsible Gaming Coalition updates statewide research. Community leaders prioritized educating young people, decreasing stigma, and lobbying for legislation that prioritizes human benefit above industrial profits.
