Sweepstakes casinos are no longer accepted for ad certification by Google.

New rules pertaining to social casino advertising are part of Google’s most recent policy update.

The internet giant clarified the kinds of games that don’t adhere to its rules for social casino games in an update to its Gambling and Games policy. Sweepstakes casinos are now considered a kind of game that is “outside the scope” of Google’s Gambling and Games policy, which requires approval for gambling advertisements.

According to Google’s revised policy, “Social casino games are online simulated gambling-style games where there is no opportunity to win something of value.”

Google’s modification upholds the previous policy that permitted social casino game advertising. Sweepstakes casinos are one type of “games that are not social casino games,” according to the company’s revised policy. Google believes sweepstakes casinos are exempt from its social casino game advertising regulations because the gaming industry is under regulatory and legal scrutiny in the United States.

Examples of social casino games that are eligible for ad certification are also provided by Google’s new policy, which forbids marketing that encourages direct interaction with social casinos. Gambling aggregators and affiliates are likewise prohibited from promoting involvement.

Google is being charged by RICO for sweepstakes.

A class action lawsuit against Google and Apple that was launched in New Jersey also centres on sweepstakes casinos. According to the lawsuit, Google and Apple made money from illicit gaming run by sweepstakes casinos like Chumba Casino and High 5 Casino.

The two tech behemoths are accused in the lawsuit of participating in the promotion of illicit sweepstakes casino websites and embezzling money from them as payment processors under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

The case targets the payment verticals of Apple and Google. None of the sweepstakes casino operators are named as co-defendants in the lawsuit.

Since both Apple and Google have their headquarters in the Northern District of California, they are trying to move the lawsuit there instead of the New Jersey District Court.

For social casinos, Google demands a different certification.
Google is targeting sweepstakes casinos because it mandates that marketers submit separate certification applications for online gambling content and social casino games.

Because Google’s Gambling and Games policy has different requirements for the two gaming verticals, companies applying for certification must create two accounts. Businesses may request for ad certification under Google’s regulations pertaining to online gambling content in order to potentially promote online casinos, slots, lotteries, bingo, sports betting, and “online gambling games played with virtual currencies or items that have real-world value.”
