Tennessee Sports Betting Handle Increases 21.7% Year on Year in April

At a handle of $463.6 million, Tennessee’s sports betting market grew 21.7% year over year in April 2025. With its handle-based system, the state collected $8.6 million in taxes, despite a monthly decline.

Tennessee’s sports betting market saw a solid uptick in April 2025, recording a 21.7% increase in total gross handle compared to the same month last year. Bettors in the Volunteer State staked $463.6 million during the month, significantly up from $380.9 million in April 2024, according to data from the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council.

However, April’s numbers reflect a slowdown from March’s performance, when the handle reached $548.6 million. That’s a 15.5% month-over-month decline, a dip that’s likely influenced by the seasonal ebb in the sports calendar as the NCAA basketball tournament wraps and fewer major sporting events dominate the betting landscape.

Including around $3 million in unannounced changes, the April handle is slightly higher at $466.5 million, maintaining the same year-over-year growth trend but displaying the same month-on-month fall as March.

Tennessee’s unique tax model generates $8.6 million in April.

Tennessee is the sole state in the United States that taxes sports betting based on handle rather than operator income. Since July 2023, licensed operators have been taxed at a set rate of 1.85% of gross betting handle, regardless of profits. This strategy generated $8.6 million in privilege tax income for the state in April alone.

The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council does not reveal comprehensive revenue numbers or breakdowns by operator, making it difficult to determine how each platform performed separately or what their profit margins were.
