Things Louisianans Should Be Aware of Regarding Unlawful Online Casino Gaming

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is warning residents about a surge in unlawful online gambling operations. With 40+ cease and desist letters issued, the state is stepping up enforcement despite a vetoed legislative measure.

More than 40 cease and desist letters have been sent to operators of online casino games in Louisiana, prompting the state’s attorney general to issue a warning to the public about the increase in unlawful operations.

AG. Some illicit gambling websites and smartphone applications that promise real money are targeting locals, according to Liz Murrill. She clarifies that certain websites, such as those run by McDonald’s or Starbucks, seem to be genuine contests but aren’t.

“I would want to state unambiguously that websites that offer online casino, bingo, keno, iGaming, and purported sweepstakes or social gaming games are in violation of Louisiana law. I will use every legal tool to enforce our laws and hold those who operate unlawful gambling websites accountable,” Murrill declared.

On June 12, Governor Jeff Landry declared it unnecessary and vetoed a measure that would have made illicit online gambling a crime. Landry said the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) is already fighting it, especially against unlawful internet sweepstakes firms and illegal offshore wagering.

“The integrity of Louisiana’s gaming industry will be upheld, patrons and bettors will be protected, and the Board and its regulatory partners will take additional action as deemed necessary,” Landry stated in a veto letter.
