The process of making decisions that could result in the opening of three casinos in the New York region continues. Two multibillion-dollar plans were rejected in Manhattan on Wednesday by community advisory panels. There are still six applications. Community-based committees in the neighbourhoods where they would be constructed have until September 30 to approve or reject them.
I asked Metro reporter Matthew Haag, who focuses on politics and real estate, to evaluate the committees’ choice and the chances for the six applications that are still pending.
Was it unexpected that two votes were cast against two significant casino proposals?

Not in whole. The committee that rejected the Avenir casino on Manhattan’s Far West Side and the Caesars Palace casino in Times Square was considering whether or not local groups had opposed both of the casinos.
Aside from the particular issues with them, several applicants believed that any proposal in Manhattan would be against the odds and that if a casino license was granted in NYC, it would be in an outside borough.
How will Caesars Entertainment and Rush Street Gaming, two massive gaming companies, be affected by this vote? The Times Square plan was based on one. The Avenir proposition was backed by the other. New York City held great promise for them.
They’re gone. The work is finished.
A long-held desire of the gambling business to be located in the centre of the nation’s largest metropolis would have been realized if Caesars and Rush Street had each operated a casino in Manhattan. The casinos that are still in the race are all affiliated with other major gaming companies, such as MGM Resorts International and Hard Rock.
Now, just six proposals remain. Which ones?
Yes, there are still six candidates for the three licenses that are up for grabs. These include MGM Empire City in Yonkers, Metropolitan Park near Citi Field in Queens, the Coney on Coney Island, Freedom Plaza in Manhattan close to the UN offices, Bally’s Bronx near the Whitestone Bridge, and Resorts World New York City at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens.
