Workers at Elk Grove’s Sky River Casino claim that their attempt to form a union is being unfairly delayed. On Tuesday, union organizers and employees went to the Wilton Rancheria Tribe’s offices to submit a letter pleading with them to acknowledge their union. They revealed that soon after they arrived, they were ordered to leave.
Since the casino was constructed in 2022, workers seeking a union have been growing increasingly irate, which is reflected in the protest. The union would be able to represent about 650 of the casino’s current employees.
Tribal leaders spent years requesting state clearance for the Wilton Rancheria Tribe’s plan to construct the Sky River Casino in Elk Grove. In order to run a casino in California, the Tribe signed a state compact. Up until the project was approved and Sky River opened, the Tribe presented its case in hearings at the Capitol.
The casino is governed by tribal law rather than federal or state law, just like all other Las Vegas-style casinos in California.
Local Unite HERE 49 union leaders claim they helped the Tribe during that process and thought there was an agreement that once the casino opened, workers would have a union. Employees claim that the endeavour has failed three years after it opened.
